STILL REVOLTING is kalmplex’s representation of people who are still revolting against the system.  by challenging social norms, participating in artistic movements to spread the word of change and people just being themselves.  from photos taken in jamaica to toronto, showcasing that the struggle continues everywhere.

kalmplex is a dj-mc-photo-video-visual-artist and kreative warrior.  born and raised in toronto, with jamaican and ghanian roots, she is a truly eclectic artist drawing inspiration from  just about everything and everyone she comes into contact with. performing at various events and venues throughout the city, and featured numerous times in the globe and mail toronto star and snap photography toronto, kalmplex is currently working on various musical and photo endeavours.  including this years contact photography festival in may where her work will be shown at anitafrika dub theatre. in addition she is currently in the midst of editing the first of many documentaries to come, “toronto uncut”, in which she documents 10 years of the innumerable cultural events that make this city the diverse metropolis it is. http://www.myspace.com/kalmplex1

fri may 1st 7:30pm $8 MAYWORKS ASIAN ARTS EXPLOISION ‘three dollars an hour’ performances by members of the asian arts freedom school and zameen shadbad, photo exhibit by elvina rafi

toronto’s asian arts freedom school tears it up with radical asian words of resistance, poetry, music, bollywood burlesque and beauty to feed the soul. this troupe of performers dig deep into their histories, as youth of varying origins, who are living and working in toronto. constantly emerging and re-emerging, freedom schoolers take up issues head on in a world where immigrants, people of colour and asians are still a commodity to this country’s labour force and economy. artists include writer/performer arti mehta, spoken word artist gein wong, photographer elvina rafi and others. freedom schoolers are mixed-race, adoptee, suburban, hood… just got here or have been here since the 1800’s! they are asian from the philippines to palestine, north china to sri lanka, and trinidad to tibet.
zameen shadbad is a series of photographs taken by elvina rafi on her last visit home to pakistan. shot in and around lahore, karachi and hyderabad, these images are a personal meditation on the heartbreak and helplessness of being diasporic and distant from a homeland that is being ripped apart – by neocolonialism, competing nationalisms and corrupt governments, rulers, and institutions – and a mourning for the human lives that have been the cost of the struggles for power in the region since its bloodstained conception.
